IBM IOT platform, DeviceName to allow special characters (scandic alphabets for example)

IBM IOT platform device names have currently some limitations. Only 36 non-special characters are accepted. This makes some limitations to IOT device naming. For example we cannot use scandic aplhabets in IOT device names (Ä-Ö). Scandic alphabets would make the IOT device names much more usable.

Of course we can overcome this limitation by using device metadata. But we do have automatic redirecting of IOT traffic to Kafka in place, and in Kafka we do not anymore have the IOT metadata available, only the device names usable in Kafka side.

We have planned rules for IOT device names, to structure the IOT data. It is quite hard to make the rules "tight" enough with these naming limitations.

If IOT device naming rules would be "losen a bit", then developers would have more possibilities to categorize and organize the device's traffic in kafka side also.

We do understand what you're trying to achieve, however there's insufficient demand for us to implement this in the IoT Platform at this time.
