IBM Cloud - Structured Ideas

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Cloud and its products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Virtualization of High Cost Hardware

Moving hardware solutions to virtual changes our costs from fixed to a variable based on traffic, and customers, and consolidates our platform to our SDN.

This allows us to pay for license when in use versus "sinking" the cost of a full router and free up critical limited space, power, and opex.

Network products to focus on...

Transit gateway; TGW-157 - 7/12 edit; Ideally the SDN can peer VPC to VPC to free traffic off of the Cisco router

Direct Link; BBS-303

This could also apply to the peering routers we use with our Internet services and lower bandwidth edge routers.

Upgrades to our platform will also be graceful, shorter timelines, and a significant reduction in capital & Opex dollars by focusing on only one element; The Smart Nics.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an architecture that gives networks more programmability and flexibility by separating the control plane from the data plane. SDN differs from traditional networking in that it is software-based, whereas traditional networking is typically hardware-based. SDN is more flexible since it is software-based, giving users more freedom and convenience in managing resources virtually throughout the control plane.

NOTE: This will imply multiple workstreams around developing SDN capabilities with SmartNICs. However, those workstreams will, over time, help save millions in hardware expenses.

Forrester Consulting 2022 Cloud Connectivity Buyers Guide key statistics:

65% of decision-makers plan to implement or extend the use of SDN technologies in the next 12 months.

33% of decision-makers indicated that SDN is their top organizational priority for 2022.

Getting better performance by using or increasing as a service networking is key for 40% of decision-makers.

39% of decision-makers are interested in using or increasing as a service network services to simplify their IT network and telco operational management costs.

Competitive example; Oracle Dynamic Routed Gateway.

This can replace Transit Gateway, it can anchor a VPN, ECMP for direct link, VPC to VPC peering. Without any product changes, it can support 300 VPCs.
